The Stuyvesant Handicap, which counts among its winners Man o' War, Riva Ridge and Seattle Slew, was canceled by management after only five horses were entered for the Grade 3, $100,000 event scheduled for Saturday. With a wet track expected, it was likely that Timber Reserve was going to scratch. The connections of Honour Devil told the racing office that he wasn't 100 percent to run rain or shine.
P.J. Campo, NYRA's director of racing, said it didn't make sense to giveaway $100,000 to three horses. Campo went on to say that the future of the Stuyvesant and several stakes races will be discussed between he and stakes coordinator Andrew Byrnes as they plan the schedule for 2010.
