Oaklawn: Races Cancelled

Oaklawn Park has canceled the balance of its Southwest Stakes card after running four races on the Monday program. Track officials announced freezing temperatures and wind chill levels as factors making the conditions unsafe for riders and horses. It is about 33 degrees and dropping in Hot Springs. 

It was immediately unclear when the Southwest, a Grade 3, $250,000 race, would be rescheduled. The stakes is the first of two preps for the Grade 1, $1 million Arkansas Derby.

Fair Grounds: Maximus Ruler out of Risen Star Maximus Ruler was not entered in the Risen Star Stakes, apparently due to a bruised foot. More info soon on that, but too bad this came out the day after the Derby futures closed, since he was one of the 19 single betting interests. The Risen Star drew a field of 12. Lecomte Stakes winner Ron the Greek was made the morning-line favorite - but I doubt he will actually be the favorite come post time. Drosselmeyer, perhaps, will take more action. Just seven in the Silverbulletday, and six in the Mineshaft, but the latter is a strong group.

Aqueduct: Second fatality but Dominguez OK Thousand Excuses had to be euthanized on the track after falling and suffering a fractured left cannon bone turning for home in the ninth race. Jockey Ramon Dominguez, hurled to the ground hard, bounced right up and escaped serious injury. He rode the finale. Kudos to jockey Channing Hill, aboard French Transition, who maneuvered his horse around the incident, thus avoiding any further problems. Thousand Excuses, a 3-year-old New York-bred son of Millennium Wind owned and bred by Ken and Sarah Ramsey and trained by Mike Maker had one win from his prior three starts and was a Triple Crown...
