Del Mar: California Flag sizzles

The best turf sprinter in California took all the heat, shrugged it off, and won the Green Flash Handicap leading gate to wire.

California Flag ($4) returned from a nine-month layoff with a super win to re-emerge as a contender this fall for the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint.

Final time of :55.22 was the fastest of the meet, and more impressive because the turf rails were down.

Five-furlong turf sprints are quickest when the rails are up.

Del Mar: Just Heat sizzles at claim box Just Heat, who finished a troubled sixth as the 2-1 favorite in the seventh race, was claimed for $12,500 in a five-way shake by Art Sherman. Just Heat was rank under leading rider Joel Rosario on the backstretch of a one-mile race for non-winners of two, essentially losing all chance when checked. Previously trained by John Sadler, Just Heat has one victory in seven starts. He needed six races to beat maidens, finally doing so at Hollywood Park on July 19.
