Hello Broadway, who never quite fulfilled the potential he showed as a 2-year-old, has been retired after injuring the cartilage in a hind foot during the running of Sunday's A Gift Stakes, owner Elizabeth Valando confirmed Wednesday.
Hello Broadway, a half-brother to the Grade 1 winner Nobiz Like Shobiz, won just twice from nine starts and earned $149,787. As a 2-year-old, Hello Broadway won his debut at Saratoga and finished second in the Grade 3 Nashua at Aqueduct. At 3, he was second in the Grade 2 Hutcheson Stakes.
Valando believes the horse was stepped on during the running of the A Gift, which was his turf debut.
``Barclay told me this is the best he's ever had,'' Valando said. ``It's just one of those things in the business. We're very distressed because he never had a chance to fulfill his potential. He was such an exceptional horse and Barclay thought he was going to be better than Nobiz.''
Valando said she has a half-sister to Hello Broadway and Nobiz Like Shobiz named Makin Music, who she hopes makes it to the races this fall.
